Good Afternoon Falconridge Families,

Sept. 30 marks Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. There is no school on September 30 as it is a non-operational day for employees and a non-instructional day for students.

This year, we are drawing inspiration from Kainai Blackfoot Elder Casey Eagle Speaker, who recently asked CBE staff, “What is something you can do?” This question reminds us that each of us plays a role in Truth and Reconciliation.

CBE staff and their families and friends are invited to attend a public commemorative event being hosted by the City of Calgary in friendship with CBE and Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) this year’s theme is ‘Remembering the Children’, in alignment with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation’s Truth and Reconciliation Week.

This year's gathering will include in-person speakers and performers, a live stream broadcast, to honour victims of residential schools, an aerial salute ceremony, and other events. The event will include an intertribal dance demonstration from CBE and CCSD students. More information on the event is available on the City’s website. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Please read on for important information and upcoming dates.

URGENT: Volunteers Needed for Falconridge School Casino on October 1-2

Falconridge School is volunteering at Ace Casino Airport (40 Aero Cres NE) on Tuesday, October 1 and Wednesday, October 2. To make this casino possible, we need many volunteers from our school! You do not need to have a police clearance to volunteer at the casino.

We have filled 25 of the 40 shifts required through the dedication of our parent council and our communities commitment but there are many shifts available for sign-up on the sign-up genius link:
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080D44A5AB2CA7FA7-50788292-fundraising/171082312

There are experienced casino advisors at each shift to help volunteers learn the roles and you do not need volunteer clearance and training is provided at the beginning of your shift. No experience necessary! That means all parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. are eligible to volunteer. This is the school's biggest fundraiser, and your help will make it a success!

Getting Active on our way to School

Walking to school is a fantastic way to kick off the day! It not only allows students to enjoy fresh air and physical activity but also helps build a sense of community. Plus, walking reduces traffic congestion and enhances safety on our roads for everyone.

Mark your calendars on October 9, 2024 for International Walk to School Day! We encourage your school to participate and celebrate this special occasion. The latest issue of The Scoop newsletter is packed with articles and resources to help you launch walking initiatives in your community. Additionally, we’ve included an action plan with creative ideas on how your school can make the most of International Walk to School Day (or Week).

At Falconridge School, our grade 6 students have started the Active & Safe Routes to School project. As a part of this, the grade 6 classes are asking for parents and guardians to complete the Family Travel Survey . This survey will give us important insights into how students travel to and from school, and any challenges they might be facing along the way.

The feedback will help Ever Active Schools to support the school’s efforts to improve travel safety and make it easier for all students.

Student Attendance

Regular attendance in an important factor in success in school. Frequent lateness and absence results in missed learning opportunities, and disrupts the rhythms of the classroom. If your child will be late or absent, please call the school attendance line. Late students come to the office to check in, so we can keep accurate attendance. We know that a number of barriers can result in lateness and absence. If your child misses school often, we will reach out to see how we can support you and child to help them attend school more regularly. As a reminder, classes begin at 8:30 am Monday-Friday. Students should be in classrooms prior to this so that they are there for morning routines and to maximize learning time.
